Adventures in Washington, D.C. – Day 3

We started our day by going to get pancakes because Evan had been desperately begging for them for what seemed like forever. As a compromise, we went to a waffle house (not THE Waffle House), but it ended up being sketchos and super-packed. Plus, they served Eggos. Ewwww.  So, instead, we found a nice cafe and got some divine croissants. I chose to get a chocolate one because I felt like the plain one wasn’t to my satisfaction – but the plain ones were better. But that’s okay.

Next, we trotted our behinds over to the National Gallery of Art, where we spent foreverrrrrrrrrrr. We started in the west wing with the sculptures and then moved upstairs to medieval art #creepybabies. Since this art was done back in ancient times, they had not figured out how to do proportions, so the babies looked like grown adults, but weird. I really liked it when my Mamafer was teaching us about all the paintings.

We found huge interactive canvases around the museum. Evan, Kate, and I all worked on one inspired by Sam Gilliam. It was pleasantly enjoyable because we got to work together and make art, not just look at it.

On our way to the east wing, we stumbled upon a cafe between the two buildings, and I decided that this was a sign that we were hungry, so we had to eat. My fam got gelato, but I didn’t get any because I wanted lunch. I took my Mamafer’s money and walked over to the salad line, where I got a gianormous salad and a bag of chips. As I was eating my lunch, my fam then realized that lunch would be good for them, too, so they also walked over to the lunch line. While I was sitting there waiting for them to come back, some man snatched my mom’s ice cream off the table and ran off so fast.

Mamafer dragged us to the east wing to look at modern art, but we had already been in the building for hours. Kate and Mama were so happy when we walked into a giant room of Alexander Calder sculptures.

I did find a piece by Jackson Pollock that I liked. It matched my dress!

After the museum, we met up with Mom and her students. Kate and Mamafer abandoned us to go see some butterflies at the Botanical Gardens. They only saw one butterfly, but a ton of bees.

We met up with them at the Washington Monument. It was a long walk to get there.

Next, we walked down to the WWII Memorial. Since it was so hot we dipped our toes into the fountain’s water.

By then, we were exhausted, so Mamafer took us back to the hotel while Mom stayed with her students. After taking showers to cool down, we watched National Treasure 2 while we waited for Mom to get back.

For dinner, we had Cuban food at Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar. We ordered way too many tostones. The food was mid. The black bean soup wasn’t really hitting, and the tostones were nothing El Taller’s. I tried Mamafer’s cheese empanadas, and they were so good though.
