Salzburg Dom
I am tired. Unlike Kendra, I got plenty of sleep last night, so I really have no excuse. It is 8:20pm, and the sun is barely starting to set. I love that it stays light out until almost 9:30pm!
Today we had breakfast as usual, then went our separate ways; Kendra headed to class, and I walked a few blocks to a cute café. I managed to pick up some WiFi, so I got some work done while sipping on a chai tea latte.
We met up again for lunch, this time at the Law School’s cafeteria. We had huge salads and some soup – good food for a decent price.
Kendra had more reading to do, so I ran some errands. I spent about five minutes in the store just trying to figure out what kind of washing machine detergent to buy.
While I was waiting for Kendra to finish with class, I made a list of all the things we should see in Salzburg. We got started as soon as she was done today! We walked to the Salzburg Dom (Cathedral) and wandered around. The bronze doors leading into the cathedral were intricately detailed. Originally built in 744, the cathedral was rebuilt from 1181 to 1200. After a fire, it was rebuilt again in 1628. The interior architecture is Baroque style, and the walls are filled with frescoes. We couldn’t get over the detail in the molding! The many windows let in lots of sunlight, and the interior looked massive and stunning. We went downstairs to the crypt, which wasn’t nearly as creepy as the one in Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin. Stone walls of the cathedral built in 1200 wove in and out of the crypt. Upstairs we passed the font at which Mozart was baptized, as well as photographs of the dome after it was bombed during an aerial raid in 1944.
After the Cathedral, we headed to Residenzplatz, a square next to the cathedral. We got some great pictures of the square, as well as the Residnez Fountain and St. Michael’s Church. By this time it was very hot out, so we decided to head back toward the dorm and grab a snack. We stopped at a little café across the river and indulged in an Apfelstrudel (apple strudel) for me, and chocolate cake and coffee for Kendra.
We decided it was finally time to do laundry, and we made one the best discoveries yet! There is a weight/workout room in the basement. The equipment is fairly old, but I was able to do a solid lift while Kendra went back upstairs to study.
I am looking forward to another day of sightseeing tomorrow!
