Day 11 – Vaduz, Liechtenstein
We had a relaxed morning packing up and heading out of Innsbruck for our next stop in Zurich. On the way, we took a quick stop in the sixth smallest country in the world – Liechtenstein. It was a bit of a trek to get there since we had to take a train to a border town in Switzerland, then store our bags in a luggage locker at the station, and take two busses to go the three miles across the river to Vaduz, the capitol of Liechtenstein. Was it worth it? I am not really sure, but I think my opinion was somewhat clouded by the scorching 90+ temp outside.
Despite being tiny, there’s quite a bit to do in Vaduz. We were too hot to attempt it all, but we hit a few things on our list. First stop was lunch, and then we headed though the center of town, stopping to take pictures of the many sculptures dotting the pedestrian walkway. We also got a nice view of the castle the Prince of Liechtenstein lives in with his family.
Liechtenstein doesn’t stamp passports, but you can pay three CHF (Swiss Francs) to get a stamp. There are a few places to get the stamps – we visited the Postal Museum and had ours done there. The museum was tiny (like Vaduz!) but had a unique exhibition of the history of the postal service and stamps in Liechtenstein. (And it was free admission!)
Next stop was the church at the end of the pedestrian-only zone – the Cathedral of St. Florin. As we were walking there, a wedding party was walking out. We headed inside for a look – it was a typical church.
At that point, we needed ice cream, and we were ready to head out of Vaduz. One stop for ice cream, and two busses later, we were back at the train station collecting our luggage and off to Zurich.
