Gear Review: Cubbies – the Best Winter Mittens for Kids

During the wintertime, our kids spend a lot of time in the snow. For years, we’ve struggled to find the best winter mittens for kids that would stay on their hands and keep the snow out. Though some products were better than others, ultimately at least one of the kids would lose a mitten and end up with freezing hands covered in snow.

the best winter mitten for kidsEnter Cubbies from EtS Apparel – an innovative product that pairs long-sleeved polar fleece shirts with mittens that zip onto the sleeves. The mittens have a water-resistant nylon exterior with water proofing liner, polyurathane rubber palms, 100g Thinsulate insulation, and polar fleece interior lining.

Hands down, Cubbies are the best winter mitten for kids. We have tried all kinds of brands that claim to stay on during winter play, but Cubbies are the only ones that have held true to that promise. They are amazing. Evan and Kate have worn them for a year now, and they still look like new!

Not only are the mittens excellent for winter play, the fleece shirt is the perfect insulating mid-layer. We put the fleece shirt under the bibs of the twins’ snowpants, zip on the mittens, and then pull their jackets on as their top layer. On days when the weather is mild, and they don’t need a waterproof outer-layer, we just use the Cubbies top to keep them warm.

What We Liked

Durability: The product is made well enough to make it through more than one winter. A year later, and they still look brand new.

Warmth: Even after long snowshoe treks, or hours building snowmen, the twins have warm hands.

Versatility: Both the fleece top and the mittens can be worn alone, or together. This means on spring days when the kids need a little extra warmth, but no mittens, they just wear their Cubbies tops. And in a pinch, when we are heading out in the cold, they wear the mittens without the fleece top.

Affordability: Cubbies are $38 each, a great price considering you get a fleece top and waterproof, insulated mittens.

Suggested Improvements

We have no design suggestions. Cubbies truly are the best winter mittens for kids. We only wish they made them in sizes larger than 4T – we would love to put Cubbies on Addison too!
