Four Corners and the Grand Canyon!!!

First major stop of the day – Four Corners! For a small fee, we got to stand in four states at once – Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico!

The scenery on the way to the Grand Canyon National Park was gorgeous – lots of beautiful mountains with multi-colored strata, random rock formations, and the occasional decaying building.

We were greeted by thunder and lightening as we arrived at the Grand Canyon South Rim east entrance. After making a quick stop at the Desert View campground to choose a site, we opted to drive into the Grand Canyon Village rather than set up our tent in the thunderstorm. By the time we reached the visitor’s center, the storm had passed, and we were able to walk along the rim. I was in awe. You imagine things in your head, based off of pictures you have seen your entire life, but seeing something in real life is so much different. I felt much the same way the first time I saw the David in person.

Having decided to splurge on dinner, we ate at the Arizona Room within the Bright Angel Lodge. The food was actually quite excellent. I had sauteed pork medallions with mashed red and sweet potatoes and a Caesar salad, while Kendra had mustard rosemary prime rib with mashed potatoes and a spinach salad. I was a bit surprised when my salad came with tortilla strips instead of croutons, but it was very tasty. Addison ate several of my green beans, which was a relief because I really am not a fan of green beans. We finished our meal by splitting a chocolate lava cake a la mode. It was no Costco cake, but it sufficed 🙂

On our way back to the campsite, we saw a deer! We also stopped at several of the overlooks. Even though the sky was still rather overcast, the views were breathtaking. Back at camp, we set up our tent on what I considered to be the best spot in the site – #34. There was plenty of room for several tents, it was a quick walk to the bathroom and water spigot, and the best part? No bears to worry about 😉
