Another Day in Salzburg

Today we had plans to go see St. Sebastian’s Church after Kendra finished classes, but by the time 3:30pm rolled around, the skies had let loose with a torrential downpour. Instead she read her assignments, and I putzed around with Google Maps API. I was most pleased to start coding a map with overlays of our travels. Expect to see it on the blog soon!

We did go out for dinner at Zum fidelen Affen (To the Cheerful Monkey), a small restaurant across the river from the Altstadt. The food was fabulous. Kendra had the special – boiled veal with potatoes, salad, and a side of apple horseradish. I went with the “Monkey Steak” – grilled pork over hash browned potatoes, covered with mushrooms, tomatoes, cheese, and bacon, and served with a side salad. Definitely the best meal we’ve had so far! It was clearly a popular place, as we were asked to share our table with two Swiss ladies. The younger of the two (I believe they were mother and daughter), who was in her mid to late forties, spoke quite a bit of English, and had lived in New York in the late 1980’s. They were both very friendly and excellent dinner companions.

Our waiter did try to charge us for the pretzels he brought and left on our table. Kendra clued me in to this often-practiced custom in Austria. Apparently bread and such is not free, as in the states. Instead, anything you eat, you are charged per roll. The waiter conveniently left this charge on the bill, and though he was apologetic when I pointed out his error, I didn’t quite believe it was an oversight.

Alas, I have no exciting pictures from today, so I will have to post this dramatic shot of Kendra studying that I snapped last night before going to bed. Until tomorrow…
